Use of Suomi.fi Messages will be transferred to the REST interface – see the transition periods!

In the next few years, the use of Suomi.fi Messages will move to the new REST interface. Through this new API, it is possible to access features that were previously in Suomi.fi Messages as features of different APIs. In the future, organisations using or activating the service will have no need to compare different APIs and assess which of them would be the best for the organisation’s needs. All features are found in one API.  

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency has now set a schedule for discontinuing old connections. The new REST interface does not affect old APIs, and they continue to work alongside the new API. However, all new activations of Suomi.fi Messages will only be carried out through the REST API from now on. 

Old APIs being phased out

From 1 January 2025, all new activations of Suomi.fi Messages will be carried out through the REST interface. New services can be added to existing connections until 31 December 2025. This applies especially to services that are connected to Suomi.fi Messages through off-the-shelf software provided by the ICT service provider used by the organisation. 

All old APIs will be closed on 1 January 2027. This means that all services using Suomi.fi Messages must switch to the new REST interface before 2027.

New API offers more seamless use

The new REST interface facilitates the activation of Suomi.fi Messages features in organisations. Its maintenance is also more seamless, and any errors can be detected and repaired more quickly. 
The transition to the new API can also be done in stages.

“If your organisation will soon be making changes to Suomi.fi Messages, we recommend adopting the new REST API right now. The transition can be made in a controlled manner one service or functionality at a time, in which case the modifications can be incremented over a longer period,” explains service owner Maria Juka-Lahdenperä from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
