Moving in Finland
Submit a notification of move using the instructions on this page when you move in Finland
- permanently from one home to another
- temporarily to another address for not more than one year and return to your permanent address.
You can use one notification to enter your address information both in the information system we maintain and, if you wish, in the Posti’s address information system.
Submit a notification of move at the earliest one month before the date of the move or at the latest one week after the move. When you submit a notification in time and following instructions, you ensure that your information is updated in time in the Population Information System and that your mail is immediately sent to the correct address. Please note, the processing time starts from the date of moving.
Foreigner´s move
NOTE. If you are a foreign citizen notify your move in accordance with the instructions on page “Foreigner’s move to Finland, in Finland and out of Finland”.
If you have already submitted a notification of change of address, please do not submit a new notification. You can follow the updating of your address information by logging in to the Suomi.fi web service at Suomi.fi sevice.
Do the following
You can submit a notification of move in the joint online service of us and Posti. To identify yourself, you need Finnish online banking codes or a mobile certificate.
You can also submit a notification of move using a paper form, which you can have from Posti or our service location. The form cannot be completed electronically or printed from anywhere. Return the form to Post or our service location. When you also use the form to provide information to Posti, you must prove your identity.
You cannot submit a notification of move by phone.
You will not be sent information about the changed address, but you can check the address displayed in the Population Information System in the Check your own personal data service.
Please note:
- You can also use the same notification to notify accompanying family members.
- If only one guardian moves from a shared home with minor children, the guardians should agree on the housing arrangements for the children before submitting a notification of move. When guardians send us a paper notification of move with the signature of both guardians, we can ensure that the guardians have agreed on the housing arrangements for children together. If another guardian's signature is missing, the processing of the notification of move is delayed significantly.
- The address of a free time residence cannot be saved as a permanent address in the Population Information System.
- If you have a move notification block, you must delete it before you can submit a notification of move. Read more about blocking a notification of move and deleting it.

- If the child and the child’s both guardians move together from the same address to a new one, one of the guardians can submit the notification of move on behalf of the whole family.

- If only one guardian moves with a minor child from the home where they have lived by themselves, the guardian can submit a notification of both of them.
Minors who have reached the age of 15 can also submit their own notification of move themselves.
The mover must submit a notification of move her/himself.
You cannot submit a notification of move on behalf of a person who is able to do it her/himself. If the mover is unable to submit a notification, you can do so on her/his behalf in the easiest way by electronic means
- if you have a power of attorney from the mover. Remember to send us the power of attorney by e-mail. Select Notification of move as the recipient.
- if you are a guardian or a person who supervises the interests of another.
You cannot notify a new address or postal address for a deceased person, as we will not update the details of a deceased person. Instead, Posti can be informed of the address to which the mail of the death estate should be delivered.
If you move out of your apartment but do not have a new address, you must submit a notification of move using a paper form.
If your municipality of residence changes and you reside in a new municipality without a permanent address, you must tell us what your residence in the new municipality is based on. You can fetch a form to prepare this report from our service location. Deliver the form and the notification of move in paper form at the same time, either by post or by bringing them in any of our service locations.
Your move is temporary if you change your permanent address for less than one year and return to your permanent address. When you move temporarily, your permanent address will also remain valid.
You must indicate the end date of the temporary move, i.e. when you will move back to your permanent address.
When your notification of move has been processed, the details of your new address will automatically be updated to the Population Information System. Please note, however, that the new address will never be updated to the Population Information System before the date of your move. You can check the address recorded for you in the Population Information System yourself in our Check Your Registered Data service.
Notifications of move are processed in the order they are received. The processing time for notifications of move is longer than usual at the turn of the month, especially in December/January, May/June and August/September. Especially the start and end of semesters at different educational institutions affect these dates.
We will process notifications of move within a municipality on the date of moving if the notification has been carefully completed. The system automatically stores the address information in the Population Information System when the personal data of the notification and the new and old address have been accurately entered, and there is no need to provide additional information in the notification. In the same manner, we will process carefully completed notifications of move between municipalities on the date of moving. If the date of moving is on the weekend, we will process the notification of move on the next business day.
If the machine verification detects any shortcomings in your notification of move, your notification will be directed to the manual processing queue. The processing time for manually processed notifications is indicated on our website.
We will ask for further clarification if, for example, a holiday home is located at the address you have provided, or if a minor child is moving out of a common home with only one of the guardians.
If you have enabled a block on a notification of move, we will be unable to process your notification. You must first remove the block either in the Check your own personal data service or by visiting one of our service locations in person. Read more about blocking and deleting a notification of move.
Once we have processed your notification of move, the address information will be updated in the Population Information System. You can check your address currently listed in the Population Information System in our Check your own personal data service.

No, it is not. A holiday residential building cannot be used for year-round living without changing its intended purpose. You can apply for a change in the use of a building from the municipal supervisory control of building.
If you want to direct your post to your holiday home for example during summer, you can make a notification to Posti.
No, you cannot.
If you have two apartments for residential use, you can choose which one to report as the permanent address. You do not even have to notify us the other address.
For receiving post, you can notify to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency a postal address that is different from the address in which you live.
You can enter the postal address in the www.muuttoilmoitus.fi service. Enter the postal address in the “What address do you move to?” field, and in the additional information field, type that this is a separate postal address.
You can notify the postal address using a paper form. You will find the paper form by selecting the topic “Separate postal address that is not the address of permanent residence” in the section of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
Even if you have a separate postal address, make a notification of move to us whenever your residence address changes and you live there at least three months.
