How can you choose to receive official mail on paper instead of digitally?
If you do not use public authorities’ digital services, official mail sent by authorities will continue to be delivered to you by paper mail. If you use public authorities’ digital services but prefer to receive official mail on paper, you can deactivate Suomi.fi Messages for one year at a time.
If you wish to deactivate Suomi.fi Messages, do this:
- Activate Suomi.fi Messages for example identifying yourself in the online service of an authority.
- Go to Suomi.fi Messages at suomi.fi/messages. Identify yourself. In the menu, select “Settings” and then choose “Stop using Suomi.fi Messages”.
- After this, official mail will be sent to you by paper mail for a year.
When you next identify yourself in a digital public authority service after one year, you will be guided to activate Suomi.fi Messages again. If you wish, you can then switch back to paper mail again in the Suomi.fi Messages settings.
If you do not identify to public authority services after the time limit has expired, official messages will continue to be delivered to you by paper mail.
Watch the recording of the April information session
The recording includes an approximately 30‑minute introduction to the digital delivery of official mail, followed by a short Q&A session.
What will change during the year 2026?
At present, electronic official mail can only be received via Suomi.fi Messages. By the end of 2026, the aim is to enable citizens to choose whether they want to read official mail also through private digital mailbox services. Everyone would then be able to select which approved service they wish to use to read their electronic official mail.
