Tips for submitting a change-of-address notification
Are you moving? We have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about submitting a notification of move. These cases concern only domestic moves within Finland.
Why do you need to submit a notification of move?
Everyone in Finland is required to notify the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) of their new address whenever they move.
At DVV, we update your address and municipality of residence in the Population Information System. Many services depend on this information, such as Kela benefits, healthcare services and public transport discounts.
Your mail will also be delivered to the right address when you report your new address to us.
When do you need to submit a notification of move?
At the earliest one month before your moving date, or no later than one week after the move.
Is it a good idea to submit the notification early?
Yes! Even though we can only register the notification on the moving date, notifications are processed in the order in which they are received.
Where do I submit a notification of move?
At muuttoilmoitus.fi. There, you can submit your change of address to both DVV and Posti at the same time.
What should you pay attention to when filling in the notification?
The most important thing is to enter your address details carefully. Check how the address is written, for example in your rental agreement, to make sure the building, stairwell and apartment numbers and letters are correct.
How long does it take to process a notification of move?
Processing times vary from a couple of days to several weeks.
- If all the information is correct, we can process the notification automatically. In that case, it will be registered on the moving date or on the next working day.
- In some cases, the notification requires further clarification. Manual processing takes longer. You can see the average processing times at dvv.fi/processing-times.
- Do not submit a new notification of move, as this will only delay the registration of your new address.
How do I know that my address has been updated?
You can check the address recorded in the Population Information System in your personal data on suomi.fi.
Should I submit a permanent or a temporary notification of move?
In most cases, a move is permanent. Submit a permanent notification of move if you are moving to another address on a permanent basis.
Submit a temporary notification of move if you are moving to another address for a maximum of one year and will return to your same permanent address.
What should I do if I suspect that a previous resident has not submitted a notification of move when moving out?
On suomi.fi, you can see how many people are registered as living at your address in the Population Information System. If the number is incorrect, notify us of an extra resident using the online form.
If mail addressed to another person is delivered to your address, return the letters to Posti marked “Does not live at this address.”
Good luck with your move and congratulations on your new home!
