If you are a student moving to a new address, make sure to submit the notification of move in time
July and August are the busiest months for moving as students in particular change apartments. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) reminds all those planning to move that you should submit the notification of move in time so that such actors as Kela and healthcare services can keep up to date with the information.
You must submit the notification of move every time when you move. A large number of actors receive notification of the new address and municipality of residence from the Population Information System.
You can submit the notification of move at muuttoilmoitus.fi. You can submit the information to the DVV and Posti on the same notification.
The notification of move is usually in effect until further notice
In most cases, the move is permanent, which means that it is in effect until further notice. The permanent address also determines the municipality of residence.
“When moving to a new address, you are probably entitled to public healthcare or a student discount on public transport only in your official municipality of residence,” says Senior Specialist Matti Mäkäräinen from the DVV.
Submit a temporary notification of move if you are moving to another municipality for studies or work for a maximum of one year and you do not want to change your municipality of residence.
Make sure that you enter all required information correctly. For example, check your address in the rental agreement to make sure that the building, stairwell and apartment numbers are correctly written.
Notifications of move are processed in the order they are received
You can submit the notification of move one month before the move at the earliest and no later than one week after the move. The DVV processes the notifications of move in the order of arrival. The changed details are registered in the Population Information System on the date of the move at the earliest.
“When you submit your notification of move early enough, the new address details will be updated more quickly. You can submit the notification of move up to one month before the move,” Mäkäräinen says.
The notification of move is processed automatically if the details given in the notification are correct. In that case, the address and the municipality of residence are updated in the Population Information System on the day of the move or the following working day. If additional checks are required, the notification of move will be processed manually. At the moment, the manual processing of the notification takes about three weeks.
You only need to submit the notification once. Do not submit a new notification of move because this will slow down the registration of the new address. You can check whether your address has been updated in the Population Information System by viewing your address information on the personal data page of the Suomi.fi Web Service.
