Certificate of death
You may need a certificate of death to register a death abroad.
You will not need a separate certificate when using the services of Finnish authorities, as they will receive the data directly from the Population Information System. Finnish banks, insurance companies, pension companies and telecommunications operators will also be informed of a person's death through the Population Information System.
When starting to manage the affairs of the deceased person, the first thing you need is a report on the deceased person’s family relationships. Please order a report on family relationships.
How to order certificates
You can order a certificate of death for an acceptable reason.
The certificate includes the following standard information:
- A statement that the person is deceased and their date of death.
- The names, (all) previous names, date of birth, municipality or place of birth, country of birth, citizenship, marital status and last municipality of residence of the deceased person as well as the registration authority’s details.
- You may also request that a personal identity code and the most recent permanent address be added to the certificate.
- The certificate does not contain any information on familial relationships. Please note that, to determine the heirs of the deceased, a report on family relationships is needed at the estate inventory. Learn more about the report on family relationships.
