Giving up the guardian’s task

If you have been appointed as a guardian, you can request to be relieved of the task at any time. You do not need to give any reasons for your request.

If your client still needs a guardian, the guardianship authority is responsible for arranging a new guardian for the client. Relieving the guardian of the task and the appointment of a new guardian are often carried out at the same time. It is also possible that you are relieved of your task but ordered to continue until a new guardian has been appointed.

If your client still needs a guardian and understands the significance of the matter, they can ask the guardianship authority to appoint a new guardian. If your client no longer understands what appointing a guardian means, the guardianship authority may request that a guardian is appointed for the client by the district court.

  • Fill in the application for relieving a guardian of their task and submit it to the Agency.

The guardian can give up the guardian’s task free of charge. If the client still needs a guardian, services related to the appointment of a new guardian (application and decision) are usually subject to a fee.
